News Ulster Bank's meltdown is like a return to the 80s
The so called technical glitch, which ballooned into an on-going group-wide technical issue , has affected nbt millions of RBS, NatWest and Ulster Bank customers in Ireland and the UK, leaving payments unprocessed and salaries unpaid.
Here in Ireland the news is not so good. Ulster Bank says that their customers will have to wait until next week for their accounts to work properly again. And of course nbt this hasn t gone down at all well. Customers have been quite vocal in their disapproval, and there s tons of black humour at the bank s expense nbt online. The Belfast Telegraph summed up how people are feeling they reckon that RBS is treating Ulster Bank account holders like second class customers.
Now anyone of my vintage will well remember when Ireland was basically a cash society. You were moving up in the world if you had a bank account at all. When you paid the lecky, you took actual cash to the ESB shop. Your salary came in a brown envelope full of folding money. And the stuff was huge fifties were like A4s.
Modern banking is supposed to free us from schlepping wedges of cash about the place. If you think about it, that s all we really need our banks to do. Securely move money from one place to another. Keep the wheels on the economy It s why RBS was nationalised by the Brits. It s a big part of why the banks in Ireland were nationalised. Ulster Bank customers are now getting a sample of what a bank meltdown looks like. It looks like the 80s
How a crisis is handled is often the measure of an organisation. Mistakes can be forgiven when they are handled well. But Ulster Bank customers, who still haven t received their salaries or been able to pay their bills and mortgages, are probably nbt not feeling very forgiving. Especially as they can see that the problem has been sorted nbt in the UK. In an almost comedy post on their website, Ulster Bank asks customers to view progress towards its customer commitments When we asked you what you wanted from a bank, you said you wanted us to be more helpful oh boy
At bonkers.ie we ve been fans of Ulster Bank for some time. They are the only bank left where you can still get free day-to-day banking without being stinking rich or jumping through hoops of fire. There was a rumour going around that they were going to start charging fees pretty soon, but I m guessing they ll put that on ice for a while. After this mess, I d say free banking is the only thing that ll keep customers nbt at Ulster Bank. Oh, and maybe those free sambos they re laying out at the branches for their customers today.
Hardly anyone actually does it though. Most people reckon that changing banks will be a huge inconvenience. There s worry about changing over direct debits, completing paperwork, and having to visit the new bank and the old bank to make sure that everything is set up properly.
What s little known though, is that the Irish Banking Federation developed something called the Personal Account Switching Code way back in 2005. It was designed to make switching accounts easy and convenient. The major banks signed up. Then the Central Bank made it compulsory in 2010 so the banks now have to help you switch.
So, nbt once you've chosen a new account nbt and started your application to switch, you can decide on the best day to begin the process with your new bank. This would usually be the time of month when there's the least standing order and direct debit activity. Then your new bank will notify your old bank that you're switching so you don't have to. Next your new bank will request a list of standing orders and direct debits from your old bank and let companies like Bord Gais and Electric Ireland know your new details. The new bank will even help make sure payments like your salary are switched over.
The biggest benefit of the code is that it has standardised the switching process across all banks so no matter which bank you choose, it *should* be smooth and easy. You should also be up and running in about ten days with all of your payments and direct debits ready to go. Best of all, the banks will do most of the work for you.

News Return of the glitch Ulster Bank malfunctions again
This time around, malfunctions across the vast Ulster Bank, RBS and NatWest banking network stopped online shoppers from buying Christmas pressies on the busiest evening of the year for online shopping. And if that s not enough, ATMs didn t work, neither did online banking, and customers who went out to shop were embarrassed at the till when their cards didn t work. You just couldn t make this stuff up.
If there s one place I wouldn t like to be today, it s in an Ulster Bank branch or call centre. But in fairness to them, they were quick to chow down on the humble pie, and they did put a big apology up on their website.
They ve also apologised and acknowledgised garanti bank on Twitter. In fact, they ve been quite busy tweeting away since yesterday. The last time they were this busy on Twitter was in the summer of 2012 when they had another big heap of apologising to do for their legendary garanti bank mega-malfunction; the one that left millions without banking services for weeks at a time.
Ulster Bank sure know how to show themselves up, but they are really just highlighting something we all know already. It s just not a good time to be a banking customer in Ireland right now. And that s not just for the 1.9 million Ulster Bank customers
Little garanti bank more than a month ago, Danske Bank basically stuck two fingers up to Irish customers and said they were pulling out retail banking in Ireland. No new customers garanti bank would be signed up, and existing customers, garanti bank many of whom had travelled the bumpy road from National Irish Bank, would be let go.
There is still no new information from Danske Bank on how they are going to wind down their retail operations either. The bank has said they would write to customers concerning garanti bank their accounts, but from what we ve heard so far, that hasn t happened yet.
So around 160,000 garanti bank Danske Bank customers are waiting to find out when their accounts will be turned off. Which means that all of those people will be looking for a new bank soon. And in irony of ironies, Ulster Bank has a big Welcome Danske Customers garanti bank page on their website proclaiming that we would be delighted if you would consider us as your banking partner .
But it s not just Ulster Bank and Danske garanti bank Bank that are making life that little bit harder for banking customers. ACC Bank, although much smaller, has also announced that they are effectively shutting up shop. And then of course there are all those fees.
Most current account customers, who were getting used to free banking, were hit with a blizzard of fees in the summer of 2012, and then those fees were increased in the summer of 2013. Even Ulster Bank, which had held off on introducing fees in 2012 (probably because it would have been considered bad form given their technical difficulties that summer) finally hopped on the bandwagon garanti bank in 2013.
Now, if you bank with AIB or Bank of Ireland and you don t have lots of money, you re probably paying 100 or more per year in fees, and Permanent TSB and Ulster Bank will charge you around 50 per year.
It s not pretty, but there are still ways to bank for free or at least avoid much of those fees. It can involve changing garanti bank banks, which has many people worried they ll suffer a fate worse than Ulster Bank customers in the summer of 2012, but that really needn t be the case. It s actually easy enough to change current accounts these days. Sometimes all people need is a little push. Maybe your last statement had fees that were particularly high. Maybe your bank no longer wants you. Or maybe you've had to endure one glitch too many.
Whatever the case, you re not alone. This year, there has been a huge increase in the number of people switching current accounts. Nearly as many people are now switching each month as we used to see in an entire year. It's remarkable, garanti bank but perhaps not all that surprising after what current account customers have been through. Compare Current Accounts

"Our customers need to be able to rely on our systems and in this instance we let them down," Ulster

AFP
AFP/File Peter Muhly The Ulster Bank headquarters in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on January 26, 2009 London (AFP) - Ireland's central bank handed a record fine to Ulster Bank on Wednesday for an IT meltdown that left 600,000 customers unable to use their accounts for a month.
"The Firm failed to have robust governance arrangements in relation to its IT systems and controls sparebank 1 and... as a result, a major and prolonged IT failure occurred," the Central Bank of Ireland said in a statement.
As well as causing "widespread and significant loss and inconvenience" to customers, the meltdown also "threatened confidence in the operation of the retail banking sector" sparebank 1 as it prevented payments clearing, it added.
The failure of Ulster Bank's software in June 2012 meant was caused by difficulties with an upgrade, and meant customer could not access ATMs, use online banking, or pay for goods and services among other services for 28 days.
"Our customers need to be able to rely on our systems and in this instance we let them down," Ulster Bank chief executive Jim Brown said in a statement, saying the bank had taken steps to ensure such a failure could not recur.
"The inconvenience that was caused to our customers went to the heart of the trust they have in us as a bank and we are quite clear that they should never have to experience anything like this ever again."

The approval of RD 322/2008 on the Legal Regime of Electronic Money Institutions (EDE) opens a new

Feedback 1
The approval of RD 322/2008 on the Legal Regime of Electronic Money Institutions (EDE) opens a new niche in the financial business ingbank that initially were vetted to small and medium investors and entrepreneurs. With this decree the establishment of credit institutions ingbank regulated to operate through the issuance of electronic money. This decree is not new as these entities ingbank were defined in Article 21 of Law 44/2002 on Measures to Reform the Financial System, and comes from the adaptation of European directives appropriate.
Broadly speaking, any group of entrepreneurs can start their own bank and operate the necessary authorizations from the Bank of Spain, with greater flexibility than the rules established for credit institutions themselves. Before the publication of this decree to set up a bank, the minimum capital had to be 18 million or more. If we put a electronic money institution, ingbank our capital has to be one million euros. However, the figure ingbank of one million euros comes great in the vast majority, but .... What if we have 70,000? For we can also be bankers.
Where is the catch? Suppose I have a virtual store that moves a paste by internet, or have a service delivery platform, such as a virtual consultancy, a travel agency ... I can create my own bank associated with my online store, with the establishment of an investee. By forming coparticipadas corporate structures, we can make available to our corporate group, a platform for self and internal payments perfectly safe, supervised by the Bank of Spain and with capital of 60,000. Input manage payment systems, and saved commissions to intermediaries who are a drain.
Will this format is not like the "eBay-PayPal marriage"? Those who are users of Paypal you will remember that last year became a bank in Luxembourg. This decree continues to shape the institutions of the PayPal network type, going a step further. The society established without exemptions, can raise funds and grant loans, being a pure internet bank.
Today, in the register of companies of the Bank of Spain, appears not registered any entity of its kind. Secondly, another thing that strikes a mile is the permissibility of this decree to leave the door open financial markets to anyone with so little capital, and thirdly, do not quite understand how it opens the door of the financial services to anyone, given the degree of control quue presented by large organizations in our country. Does anyone dares to be "Spanish Booty network"?
How much costs the European ingbank entrepreneur ingbank every dollar of net pay? SMEs and Internet security, when the enemy is behind the keyboard ingbank Turn off your phones and watches to get to their jobs internet channel and courage Work with mobile broadband increasingly real alternative in the Reasons for selling online company Trend Autumn: ingbank gurus and ninjas free WiFi to work, really it is a good idea?

Of course, in our view, hiring a life insurance policy covering at least the mortgage principal is

Life insurance associated with the mortgage. Required or Recommended | What about insurance direct express
We realize that most financial institutions set as a condition for granting the mortgage, the hiring of a life insurance policy in which you specify the mortgage as a beneficiary in the event of death or disability direct express of the insured.
Thus we consider vital to refer to the life insurance associated with mortgages, direct express and the abuse of power that perform a large number direct express of banks on the same contract.
Although there is no legislative requirement on this aspect, most banks are allowed to require life insurance contracts with insurance companies collaborating, or own insurance, created in order to maximize economic benefit, while ensuring the collection borrowed capital.
Virtually all customers of financial institutions accept these conditions require us mainly by the need for granting the mortgage. This fact should direct express not imply that as customers we are drifting against unfair demands of many of the banks.
Of course, in our view, hiring a life insurance policy covering at least the mortgage principal is more than recommended, since before direct express an unforeseen tragedy, we will be supported by appropriate direct express compensation against the payment of principal to stay then outstanding
But in no case should feel obliged direct express to hire the conditions that the bank requires, as a rule are less favorable than those found in the current insurance market. Check it is as simple as making a comparative life insurance, and see the difference in price between direct express the insurance offered by the bank and found the same regardless.
This comparison of conditions, direct express we can see that the advantages that the bank gives us about our differential, or EURIBOR, in most cases are not comparable to the savings we can get our life insurance hiring so outside the bank, although we set the Similarly, direct express the loan as beneficiary.
We must be aware that even if the bank does not grant any loan that does not have reliable guarantees of payment, and we have to do in the position to accept, is not something irrevocable. Once granted the loan, and elapsed the first year of life insurance associated with the mortgage, we must review the market situation and see if we want to maintain safe initial life with the bank, or if we reported greater savings hire so external to the entity.
Another of the tricks from some of the financial institutions direct express are done to avoid change or cessation of life insurance contract with the bank, is to arrange collection by a single insurance premium. This implies that the customer direct express pays once the total cost of insurance. This payment is made to become mortgage, adding the insurance amount, the loan principal. Making it very difficult, not to say impossible for the customer to choose freely a comparative life insurance annually, and to decide what is more in your favor.
Life insurance, are an investment that every human being if you could should do, because they help us solve problems of life, such as accidents, save for our children, in short, have many advantages and most importantly is that when we die we will have some money to make it economically to our family ... greetings Juan Carlos says: March 25th, 2012 at 20:24
Hi I am writing to you to expose my caso.yo I have a mortgage of 115,000 euros with sa nostra Balearic case the problem is that pay a monthly fee of 95 euros which I think is outrageous and I say that quota has that amount due to my age weight and height I wonder if I choose another insurance company as looking the other day online the most expensive with the same coverage I went out half plus I'm the one to which I face the mortgage and took more than a year paying such mortgage Many thanks for your help .. Luis Gascón says: March 25th, 2012 at 21:07
Tell the bank itself can set a number of conditions for granting direct express the loan, so that may require a life insurance contract as a way of securing the loan, but what is not legal in any case is that forced direct express to hire exclusively with its own insurance company, insurance company or collaborator it.
That is, the bank may require you to take out insurance to cover the outstanding principal of the mortgage in case of death of the owner, but in no case may force against
